This is a topic that is EXTREMELY close to my heart. Because for a long, long time I participated in extremely codependent relationship patterns.
I used to completely neglect myself and my needs in my personal relationships in an effort to manipulate, control and mitigate the emotional reactions of the people around me.
I had no boundaries.
And no, this didn’t come from a malicious place: it came from an insecure one.
I wanted to create the assurance that no one was mad at me, that everyone liked me, and that no one would leave me. In trying to control the way everyone else felt (which, I might add, is an impossible and fruitless endeavor anyway), I made myself miserable by neglecting what I actually needed in my relationships.
Since then I’ve had to take a long, hard look at my relationship to RELATIONSHIPS and make some pretty big changes.
I had to rewire myself to become increasingly secure, create and maintain my own boundaries, and respect the autonomy of others.
And guess what happened?
My anxiety in romantic relationships dissolved.
I am finally in a place of acceptance with my family.
My level of availability to the clients I am working with allows me to have a life outside of my inbox and computer, but still gives them the support they need between our sessions.
I have friendships in my life that foster raw, triggering, call-you-out-on-your-bullshit honesty and there is zero fear of losing them.
Now I’m a firm believer that your interpersonal relationships are one of the biggest catalysts for growth and self-actualization that you have.
